This barrel selection focuses on highlighting those barrels that exude characteristics of power and weight, leading to a more masculine expression of Pinot Noir from our site. The goal is to accentuate dark fruit and earthy base notes in the Nils bottling. With the Nils we seek power and elegance, through balance and complexity.
The blend is comprised of the three Austrian varieties we have growing at Johan, with approximately 55% Blaufränkisch, 32% St. Laurent, and 13% Zweigelt. This light-bodied red blend is bright, juicy, and oh-so-quaffable!
The estate Blaufränkisch shows a likeness to the sanguine and iron minerality that defines our Pinot Noir but with more nervy acidity and a darker, deeper fruit profile.
While the Zweigelt grape may sound like an exotic variety for us here in the US, it is the most widely planted red grape in the country of Austria. This variety achieves a complex and compelling expression while still remaining juicy, nervy, and oh, so drinkable!
