2017 Pinot Noir Three Barrel Magnum
The Three Barrel blend is composed of our three most alluring and exotic barrels from a given vintage. Every year we end up with a few barrels that express particular aroma and flavor characteristics that are beyond our comprehension. These barrels are in perfect harmony with their time and place resulting in something complete and truly compelling. The goal with Three Barrel is to maximize aromatic complexity and perfume, while exemplifying a firm tannin extract acid structure to preserve this wine for long-term aging.
In comparison to the previous three vintages, 2017 was a welcoming shift back to a “more normal” Willamette Valley growing season. Across the board 2017 was an incredible “schnazzy” vintage, with nice fruit concentration and bright natural acidity, offering focus and vibrancy to each of the wines.
This wine was made from blending the three most intriguing, age-worthy barrels of estate Pinot Noir from the 2017 vintage. The blend was made up of one barrel each of the following clones: Swan, 943, and 828. Each of these three lots were fermented, using exclusively native yeast (both primary and malolactic), with approximately 92% whole-cluster fermentation. The wine was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 33% of which were new.
